Collingwood, Ontario - Hon. Helena Guergis, P.C., M.P. for Simcoe-Grey, today announced that the expansion of the municipal sewer and water services to Collingwood’s new industrial subdivision are moving forward thanks to an investment of $1,570,480 from the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) in Southern Ontario.
“Under the Leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our government has committed to act quickly to provide the specialized support that our communities need during these uncertain economic times. Through our Economic Action Plan, we are taking action to simulate the economy, and create jobs in communities like Collingwood. ” said Hon. Helena Guergis, P.C., M.P. “The funding for this project is one of 90 projects that we are announcing worth a total federal investment of up to $102 million dollars. I am pleased to deliver this funding and I look forward to continue working with Mayor Carrier and our municipal leaders on more ways to create jobs and strengthen our local economy.”
“MP Helena Guergis recently brought Minister Tony Clement to our area to listen first hand to Collingwood's major employers and their concerns about "Buy American" policies. MP Guergis continues to advocate for funding programs in her riding to assist our community with the negative impacts of the global recession. The Town of Collingwood is a major employer for our region importing about 37% of our labour force. This 1.5 million dollars will support the decisions of Collingwood Council in making the necessary strategic investments in infrastructure to create new job growth opportunities such as the Sanford Fleming Industrial Park and this new investment by Mr. John DiPoce's 150 acre business/industrial park. These investments by the Federal Government, the Private Sector and by Collingwood Council will ensure a stronger outcome from this global economic recession than without and I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for MP Guergis's continued valued efforts on behalf of the citizens of Collingwood."”, said Mayor Carrier.
These projects were part of the up to $102 million investment made through the Community Adjustment Fund for 2009-2010, announced on August 27 by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, newly appointed Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). It is the government's intention to support a total of 90 projects in communities across Southern Ontario that are struggling with the effects of the global economic downturn.
Approved projects must meet the terms and conditions set out in their funding agreements. A complete list of approved projects in Southern Ontario will be made available online at
www.ic.gc.ca/caf on September 10, 2009.
Applications for 2010-2011 CAF project funds will be accepted by FedDev Ontario later this year. A public announcement will be made once details are finalized.
CAF is just one in a series of initiatives introduced in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan designed to address the short-term effects of the economic decline on communities across Canada, while preparing our communities for long-term growth.
