Government of Canada invests in Collingwood Hospital to stimulate local economy
September 09, 2009

16th Annual Golf Classic in support of the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital Foundation, Creemore Ontario – Hon. Helena Guergis, P.C., M.P. for Simcoe-Grey, today announced that the Geothermal project for the new 600 sq. building at the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital is moving forward thanks to an investment of $231,000 from the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) in Southern Ontario.

“Under the Leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our government has committed to act quickly to provide the specialized support that our communities need during these uncertain economic times. Through our Economic Action Plan, we are taking action to simulate the economy, and create jobs in communities like Collingwood.” said Hon. Helena Guergis, P.C., M.P. “The funding for this project is one of 90 projects that we are announcing worth a total federal investment of up to $102 million dollars. I am pleased to deliver this funding and I look forward to continue working with CAO Linda Davis, Board Chair Don Smith and the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital on more ways to create jobs and strengthen our local economy.”

“We are very excited to receive this funding to support the implementation of a geothermal heating and cooling system for our new modular building,” said Linda Davis, President & CEO of Collingwood General & Marine Hospital.  “This new system will certainly help us in our quest to become a more environmentally friendly facility.”

Don Smith, Chair of the G&M Hospital Board of Trustees:  “Phase I of our overall facility redevelopment plan will provide about 7,000 square feet of new space, allowing us to ultimately expand and renovate some of our most crowded patient care spaces.  The new geothermal system will provide economical heating and cooling which will improve the new building’s efficiency.  We are extremely grateful to Minister Guergis for her hard work in making this grant available to the G&M Hospital.”

These projects were part of the up to $102 million investment made through the Community Adjustment Fund for 2009-2010, announced on August 27 by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, newly appointed Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). It is the government's intention to support a total of 90 projects in communities across Southern Ontario that are struggling with the effects of the global economic downturn.

Approved projects must meet the terms and conditions set out in their funding agreements. A complete list of approved projects in Southern Ontario will be made available online at www.ic.gc.ca/caf on September 10, 2009.

Applications for 2010-2011 CAF project funds will be accepted by FedDev Ontario later this year. A public announcement will be made once details are finalized.

CAF is just one in a series of initiatives introduced in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan designed to address the short-term effects of the economic decline on communities across Canada, while preparing our communities for long-term growth.
