Collingwood, ON – The federal government is pleased to provide additional support to Home Horizon Georgian Triangle Residential Services for the second phase of a project to equip women living in transitional housing to break the cycle of abuse. The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), made the announcement today in Collingwood.
Minister Guergis announced that Home Horizon Georgian Triangle Residential Services will receive a supplement of $138,176 for the second phase of its project, Strong Women Mentoring Program. This is in addition to the original $41,200 that the organization received for the first phase.
“Our Government is taking concrete action to end violence against women,” said Minister Guergis. “I am proud today to announce supplemental funding to a grassroots project in Collingwood that is enabling women vulnerable to societal shortfalls to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to escape violent relationships. By supporting the second phase of this project, past participants will have the opportunity to gain valuable employment skills by leading workshops for their peers.”
“We are pleased to have the support of the Government of Canada for the second phase of our project, which will provide training on best practices to five local shelters and five transition houses,” said Ms. Laurie VandenHurk, President of the Home Horizon Georgian Triangle Residential Services. “This new funding will also enable us to address emerging regional issues and take action on a strategic plan for women in crisis.”
In the first phase of the project, which used a peer mentorship model, 20 women participated in workshops on abuse prevention, life skills, financial literacy, self-esteem and goal-setting. In the second phase, an additional 30 women will participate in workshops delivered by 15 past participants. A regional forum will be held to identify best practices and initiate a community action plan.
Funding for the Strong Women Mentoring Program project comes from the Women's Community Fund of the Women’s Program of Status of Women Canada.
