Indian Residential Schools Apology
June 20, 2008
The Prime Minister of Canada, on behalf of all Canadians, issued a full, formal apology to former students of Indian Residential Schools. This is an historic step toward healing and reconciliation. The treatment of children in Indian Residential Schools is a sad chapter in Canadian history. Removing and isolating children from the influence of their homes, families, traditions and cultures, and assimilating them into the dominant culture was wrong.

Today, we recognize that this has caused great harm, and has no place in our country. The Government recognizes the apology will not erase what happened. But in formally acknowledging the suffering of former students and the damaging impact the system had on the Aboriginal community, the Government has demonstrated its sincere commitment to achieving reconciliation with Aboriginal people across Canada.

This apology reinforces the government’s commitment to numerous other government initiatives designed to address the tragic legacy of Indian Residential Schools, notably the historic Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement and its components.

The Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission is the cornerstone of a new relationship between Aboriginal people and other Canadians, a relationship based on knowledge of our shared history, a respect for each other and a desire to move forward together.
